| Notes | Symptoms: On login, about 8 boxes pop up with red stop sign shapes containing white "X" symbols. Some appear to have unreadable messages using very tiny fonts. The task bar and desktop icons also have microscopic fonts. Right-click and left-click work as expected in that they bring up menus, but those menus also have unreadable fonts. It appears impossible for the user to log out, since Gnome seems to depend on a working mouse and GUI for even such a basic function. You may also find the .xsession-errors file has grown to several megabytes of cries for help. This is probably due to some undesirable preference somewhere in the labyrinth of Gnome related files. It might be easier to log in as another (working) user ID, obtain root, and create a backup directory somewhere. Move the following files and directories out of the problem user's home directory to the backup directory: .esd_auth .gconf .gconfd .gnome .gnome2 .gnome2_private .gnome-desktop .gtkrc-1.2-gnome2 .ICEauthority .metacity .nautilus .recently-used .rhn-applet.conf .xsession-errors. Then have the problem user log in again. A new desktop will be created to replace the corrupted one. |
