| Notes | The problem seems to be with ls rather than with bash, because echo works fine with the same argument list. This has been seen with 4136 files totalling 132352 bytes in the filenames, but not with 4507 files totalling 126988 bytes in the filenames. Note that because 4507 files seemed to work OK while 4136 files did not, the limit is probably not the number of files but rather tht total length of their names. Note also that it is not a problem with the directory itself, because directories have been tested with over a million files and still seem to work fine. |
